Suisun City is a blooming community located on Highway 12 just south of Fairfield. Suisun City is situated midway between San Francisco and Sacramento in central Solano County. The Old Town section of the City is located on the Suisun Channel, which empties into Suisun and Grizzly Bays, the connecting point for the Sacramento River and the San Francisco Bay. The waterfront promenade of Suisun City’s historic Waterfront District boasts beautiful views and serves as an ideal setting for the myriad of outdoor activities and dining choices. Suisun City (pronounced “soo SOON” ) takes its name from the adjacent Suisun Bay, which in turn is named for the Suisunes, a Native American tribe of the area. Established in the 1850s as a focal point of commerce and transportation during California’s Gold Rush, Suisun City has not forgotten its roots. The community gathers regularly for civic events in Old Town, which is replete with public spaces, promenades and an historic shopping district centered on the picturesque waterfront. City Hall sits on the waterfront’s eastern side with its towering dome providing a familiar local landmark. Suisun City’s location led to its rising prominence in the late 19th Century as the trading center tying agricultural areas with major urban centers through shipping and railroad links. In 1869, the Transcontinental Railroad connected to downtown Suisun City, expanding the region’s reach across the nation.
Suisun City is home to the Suisun Marsh which is the largest contiguous brackish marsh remaining on the west coast of North America. It is a critical part of the San Francisco Bay-Delta estuary ecosystem. Encompassing 116,000 acres, the Suisun Marsh includes 52,000 acres of managed wetlands, 30,000 acres of bays and sloughs, 27,700 acres of uplands, and 6,300 acres of tidal wetlands.
Another public part of the marsh is Grizzly Island Wildlife Area which is managed primarily for waterfowl, although over 230 species of birds have been seen here as well as many mammals, amphibians, reptiles, and fish.
Vacaville/Fairfield/Suisun City are home to the Travis Air Force Base, which is under the operational control of the Air Mobility Command. The 60th Air Mobility Wing is the largest wing in the Air Force’s AMC command, and is the host unit at Travis AFB. Travis AFB handles more cargo and passengers through its airport than any other military terminal in the nation. The base has had a major impact on the Central Solano County community, as many military families and veterans have chosen to make the city their permanent home. It is also the largest employer in the entire county and greatly helps the area’s overall economic stability.
